Art Date #2 - Adjourn Studio with Colored Girls Liberation Lab
The first week of work in The Artist’s way is titled “Recovering a Sense of Safety”. The purpose of this weeks work aligned seamlessly with this particular event.
On Sunday afternoon, I entered the warm, sunlit studio to the sounds of laughter and gentle chatter.
After greeting the hosts, Jenn Roberts, founder of the Colored Girls Liberation Lab and LaTonia Smith Cokely founder of Adjourn Teahouse, I poured myself a cup of “Love Liberates”.
I introduced myself to a few ladies but also really took my time exploring LaTonia’s unique tea blends.
Home Sweet is a new favorite, Assam black tea, almonds, apple, cinnamon, carrot and coconut. The packaging is so luxurious!
Jenn set the tone by allowing us to share and dream out loud. LaTonia, loved and comforted us from the inside out with her tea. Together they created an opportunity for growth through sisterhood that was absolutely beyond compare.
There are so many things I could say about this but I will hold the vulnerability of the safe space we shared close to my heart. What I will say is that when Black Women gather there’s magic present.
The pauses in the constant up and down rebalance you. They make you better able to walk back into the world a little less burdened, and more confident. It’s a reset through understanding that all Black Women deserve.
Fit check for that evening because fashion is self expression and that is important to me.
A few years ago, I challenged myself to wear more color but it always feels good to me to wear all black. Not all light workers wear white. This year is all about living my truth and not what I’ve been conditioned to believe. And that feels.. safe. Exciting. Familiar.. & Home Sweet.
